Sammy And Rosie Get Laid

Attempting to cash in on the surprise success of My Beautiful Laundrette, a story dealing with Pakistanis living in London, which Frears had directed for television and which went onto a theatrical release and international popularity, bringing Daniel Day-Lewis to stardom, this thematically-related film also written by Hanif Kureshi, returns to the expatriate Pakistani experience, but is like a soap opera with pseudo-intellectualised dialogue, suitably badly acted, that chokes on its pomposity very early and was a major disappointment from a director who went on to build a strong C.V.
