Scripted by Bob Ellis and Anne Brooksbank, ...Maybe This Time is familiar territory for the former at least – a mix of marital infidelity, Labor politics, the halls of academia and ordinary Australian life delivered with wry intelligence and peppered with literary references. It would take a strong director to break out of this wordy straight-jacket and Chris McGill, in his first and only directorial effort, is not the man for the job.
Judy Morris plays Fran, a typically “liberated” woman who drifts aimlessly through a series of relationships whilst she tries to get her life together. Drifting is never a promising concept for a film and what we end up with is a concatenation of male types (including an unconvincingly cast Bill Hunter as a pantsman) in an uninvolving story that for all the cleverness of its observations and Morris's solid performance in the central role, does not amount to much.
